People Power

Posted on August 28, 2007May 30, 2012 by Daphne

No, I’m not talking about Soylent Green. 😉

I’m talking about the green newscasts my local station, WCCO, has been putting on at the annual Minnesota State Fair. They somehow hooked a bunch of bicycles up to an array of batteries. Then they got fair-goers to ride the bikes, and generate energy, which was then stored in the batteries. When there was enough energy in the batteries, they flipped a switch and ran an entire newscast off the batteries. Entirely on People Power. So far they’ve done two newscasts that way. Now, it’s impractical for a long-term sustainable energy source, but a fun thing to do at the Fair.

Nevertheless, I wish they didn’t call it People Power, because I can’t get that association out of my head. Soylent Green is People!
